Each year, over 16 million American adults have at least one depressive episode. There are many causes for depression, which is why there is no singular cure for this mental health problem.

Often times, people get so wrapped up in work or making money that they neglect their mental health. Not only can this lead to problems like depression, but it can also make a person be extra critical of themselves and those around them.

Learning how to practice self-love can be extremely helpful when attempting to remain positive in the face of adversity. The following are some of the things you need to do to make the self love philosophy work.

1. Self Love Starts When You Stop Comparing Yourself to Others:

One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to practice self love is comparing themselves to others. You need to realize that there are always going to be people who have more than you do. Learning how to be content with what you have is the first step in loving yourself.

Some people are simply too harsh on themselves. Being overly critical of everything you do will only lead to you feeling down and not worthy of love. Instead of criticizing every move you make, learn how to be positive and encourage yourself to try hard.

Even if you fall short of the glory, you need to pick yourself up and try again. Being persistent is the key to achieving success in nearly every facet of your life.

2. Surround Yourself with the Right People:

Successfully implementing the practice of self-love will be impossible if you’re not surrounded by supportive people. Being in a toxic relationship can affect your self-esteem and lead to a lot of anguish.

If you feel like the people around you don’t support your goals, work on removing them out of your life. While this may be difficult, it’s generally the best thing for you and your mental health. If you have a  great support system around you, learning how to love yourself and be positive will be easy.

3. Unplug from Technology:

If you’re like most people, you are dependent on your phone and other mobile devices. In today’ technology-driven world, staying connected is a must. Having the latest tech tools at your disposal can be both a blessing and a curse.

Learning how to unplug from technology and be alone with your thoughts can be great for your overall mental health. There is nothing wrong with doing things like taking a break from social media for a while. By taking these breaks, you can start to see what truly matters in life.

Realizing that improving your self-esteem and overall mental well-being is an ongoing process is essential. Thinking you’ll be able to master the art of self love overnight is a recipe for disaster.
