Major Companies

Corporate social responsibility programs are increasingly important to building brand loyalty.

They serve a range of purposes, depending on each company’s priorities. However, they share a similar goal to improve the lives of others through donations of products, supportive action, and program funding.

A quick look a some of the most successful programs provides insight into those efforts.

Developing Programs That Support Education

Education can open doors for people no matter what their background. That’s why it is one of the most effective strategies for enacting change on a large scale. As a result, many companies have taken an approach to support education in local communities where they have a significant presence. This often takes the form of donating to local schools or training and apprenticeship programs to help prepare students for a career in the industry.

Other companies take a more global approach to education. For example, Young Living Essential Oils oversees a foundation that, among other things, operates an academy in Ecuador designed to provide a solid academic foundation and prepare students to pursue a higher education degree. In this way, the Young Living Foundation aims to make a lasting difference by opening the door to new opportunities.

Promoting Sustainable Harvesting Initiatives

Many raw materials are sourced from countries in the Global South that have long been exploited and subject to outside control. While this may be profitable for major corporations, many realize the practice’s negative consequences far outweigh the financial gain.

As a result, many corporate responsibility programs developed by manufacturers focus on sustainable harvesting and mining of raw materials. For example, the International Wood Products Association details major wood harvesting and importing companies’ efforts to improve sustainability and preserve natural resources. In other areas, efforts are being made to reduce land clearing associated with products, including coffee beans, cocoa, and palm oil fruit.

Providing Resources to Underserved Populations

Many businesses grew at the expense of underserved populations that toiled for years in dangerous conditions for little pay. These practices are largely condemned, and many groups are working to expose poor working conditions. Perhaps more importantly, many companies have realized their contribution to the problem and are now working to right those wrongs.

Programs that provide training and support to underserved communities improve lives and their image. According to one research study on the effects of CSR programs in Bangladesh,  they have the potential to enact lasting, transformative change among marginalized groups.

Granting Microloans

Granting Microloans

Microloans are typically short-term loans for amounts under $50,000. In industrialized societies, they are popular among small businesses and startups who may not qualify for a traditional business loan. However, in developing areas, these loans can look very different. They may be for several hundred dollars, but that amount can provide essential equipment or training to give someone an entirely new opportunity in life.

Many companies use microloans to provide seed funding for transformative programs around the world. Others provide loans to individuals who need to meet financial obligations, such as a medical bill. Unfortunately, this market has many predatory lenders, and it is not all sunshine and roses.

High-interest rates, poor applicant screening processes, and a failure to disclose critical information are all rampant. Howgram, these loans are typically offered after a careful screening process and at low or no interest when part of a corporate philanthropy program.

Subsidizing Volunteer Hours

It’s relatively well known that volunteers are necessary to many charitable organizations. However, developing a reliable and skilled volunteer pool can be a major challenge. One way to overcome this is by using corporate volunteer programs.

While each program will vary, they generally contain similar basics. For example, many companies with corporate volunteer programs either pay employees for working at the nonprofit or give them some other form of compensation, such as extra paid time off.

Additionally, many are coordinated so that a large number of workers can complete large-scale projects. This is excellent for community clean-ups, building projects, and special events that require extensive staff.

Most major companies have corporate social responsibility programs to address inequality and injustices. Some focus on education and local community advancement, while others work to increase sustainability and reduce the climate impact of their operations. Combined, these programs have the potential to make true lasting change around the world.
