Mental Health

Taking care of your mental health in 2020 has been a challenge. Politics now seems more important than ever, and many people have had mental breakdowns because of it. The election in 2016 put a lot of people over the edge in terms of mental illness, and it seems to be getting progressively worse as time goes on. However, there are certain things you need to do to prevent these strenuous times from destroying you mentally.

Choose Different Media Sources

If you find yourself getting angry every time you watch a certain news source, you might want to change a channel to something else. You must keep a cool head and allow yourself to feel great every day. It doesn’t make any sense for you to be angry at a news program that you have no influence over. It makes sense for you to put your time and energy into media sources that will make you feel good. For example, you can focus on stories that provide positive and uplifting news about something nice. Your focus is what creates your reality, so you need to put it where it will serve you best.

Focus on Positive People

Not only should you cut horrible news programs out of your life, but you should be doing the same thing with people. Talkspace talks a lot about cutting out harmful people from your life, so you don’t end up having a mental breakdown because of them. Other than the news, a significant source of mental problems that people get now is from their friends and other people surrounding them. If you find yourself getting angry at someone over politics or other news, it makes sense for you to get them out of your life. It might be hurtful at first, but it is the best thing for your mental health in the long term.

Learn When to Pull Back and Take a Break from Media

Sometimes you need to take a break from everything. That means getting time and space to yourself to refocus and feel rejuvenated. If you find that the media is causing you problems and nothing you do can change, it makes sense for you to have a complete media diet. It is the same thing that you would do if you found yourself gaining a lot of weight. You would restrict the food you are eating until your waistline was appropriate for the way you want it to be. This is often the best strategy for making sure you don’t feel overwhelmed, and you can keep your cool in every situation.

Don’t Focus on What You Cannot Control

According to Talkspace, a big source of problems for people is focusing on things they cannot control. There are a few small things in your life that you have control over, and you should be focusing only on those things. It makes no sense focusing on things that are far away and getting mentally involved in them. No matter what you do, you cannot change what someone says or does, so it makes sense to focus on what you say and do. Focusing on things within your circle of control will help you feel great while also helping you achieve something. It is like going to a sports game and expecting that your emotions will dictate the outcome of the players.
