Singer-songwriter Gary Wrights, well known for his hit album “The Dream Weaver” has died at the age of 80. On 4th September, the singer’s death was confirmed by his sons Dorian and Justin at his Palos Verdes Estates’ home. They confirmed this news to news outlet Variety and ABC News, respectively.
The ‘Love is Alive’ singer’s son Justin comments on his fathers battle with Parkinson’s disease along with Lewy body dementia to ABC news. He says his father has been battling these diseases for the past six years.
Gary Wrights was born in the month of April in 1943 in New Jersey. He found initial success by playing keyboard for the Spooky Tooth, a British hard rock band. After the group disbanded, the singer shifted his focus to a solo music career. He released his albums “Extraction” in 1970 and “Footprint” in 1971.
But the album which made him famous was “The Dream Weaver” released in 1975 that became a hit. This album had two singles that were hit at the time, the ‘Dream Weaver’ and ‘Love is Alive.’ This soft rock album was recognized as some of the first rock albums to only feature synthesizers.
In 2011, the singer talked about this album in an interview with the Daytona Beach News-Journal which is a part of USA TODAY that, “It was a big deal creatively because I had been working with basically a guitar-oriented band, which was Spooky Tooth.”
He added further, “I had never consciously sat down and said, ‘I’m going to do an all-keyboard album.’ It just fell into place as I was writing the songs for the album.” The album sold 2 million copies. The title track of the album “Dream Weaver” was also featured in many films like “The people VS. Larry Flynt,” “Wayne’s World” and “Toy Story 3.”
