Your Child

As a parent, you understandably will want to give your little one the best chance of success in life. And while this is ultimately the result of several factors, education, and in particular, early years’ education, can play an important part in your child’s future.

Fortunately, there are plenty of options parents and caregivers can pursue to stimulate their children’s curiosity and encourage a love of learning.

Here Are 4 Tips To Get Your Child In The Right Direction For Their School Career:

1. Pursue Exploratory Learning with Your Child

Naturally, it can be difficult to engage young children with traditional learning methods, due to their short attention spans. One of the best ways to help your child to learn at an early age is by encouraging their own curiosity and sense of discovery.

Exploratory learning refers to a mode of learning through their own inquiry. Answering and encouraging your child to ask questions, for example, can help them develop an active interest in learning and help to prepare them for a classroom environment.

Similarly, allowing your kids to experiment with different tools and resources in play can enable them to engage in authentic problem-solving and decision-making.

2. Investigate Different Schooling Options

Unfortunately, the quality of schooling in your area can be highly inconsistent. To that end, maximizing your child’s chance of success also involves choosing the right schooling option for them. Specialized private schools, for example, can offer a wider variety of activities to broaden your child’s horizons.

They also often tend to have smaller class sizes than other schools, meaning children get more one-on-one attention in their learning. Many private preparatory schools additionally offer bursaries and scholarships if finances are an issue. Research private preparatory school admissions if this is something you may be interested in.

Elsewhere, home-schooling, either by parents or private tutors, has grown dramatically in popularity since the COVID-19 pandemic. This can be a worthwhile option if you feel your child needs a particularly specialized curriculum.

However, a disadvantage of home-schooling is that it can neglect the social development that occurs in mainstream schooling. It is therefore important to consider your child’s own specific needs when deciding on their education.

3. Encourage Literacy Skills

Reading is naturally one of the most important skills a child needs to learn successfully, as it forms the basis for much of studying in school. Reading with your child from a young age is therefore a great way to help prepare them for school and develop a love of reading.

Having them read aloud to you can also be a great way to help with fluency and discussing literature with them can help them develop comprehension skills.

4. Promote Independent Learning

While you will naturally want to keep a close eye on your child’s development, it is also crucial that they develop learning autonomy for them to succeed in school.

You may therefore want to try and encourage independent learning and discovery when the opportunity arises. Similarly, helping them with their focus can be a helpful way of preparing them for a classroom setting.
