Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are a common problem in pregnancy. The growing uterus puts pressure on the inferior vena cava, which is the vein on the right side of your uterus. This can lead to varicose veins. Fortunately, varicose veins do not have to be an inevitable part of pregnancy. There are things that your vein doctor recommends that you do to prevent them.

Exercise Daily:

You may not feel up to exercising while you are pregnant because it is uncomfortable to do simple activities. However, exercising is one of the best things that you can to prevent varicose veins. Even if you only take a 10-minute walk around the block every day, this can be helpful for preventing varicose veins.

Avoid Sitting or Standing Too Long:

If you sit or stand too long, then the blood may start to pool in your legs. This can lead to varicose veins. If you have a job that requires you to sit or stand for long periods of time, then it is important to make sure that you change positions frequently. Make sure that you do not cross your legs while you are sitting.

Keep Your Weight Within the Recommended Range:

Excess weight gain can put you at risk for developing varicose veins. That is why you will need to avoid gaining a lot of weight during your pregnancy. The recommended weight gain for a woman who was normal weight prior to pregnancy is 25 pounds. The “eating for two” is just a myth. You only need to eat 300 extra calories while you are pregnant.

Wear Compression Stockings:

Compression stockings can be uncomfortable to wear. They can also make you feel like you are a grandparent. However, wearing compression stockings can be beneficial for preventing varicose veins. Compression stockings keep the blood flowing as it should. You should put your compression stockings on first thing in the morning. This is the time when swelling is likely the lowest.

You can find compression stockings at your local pharmacy. You can also get them from your healthcare provider.

Elevate Your Legs:

You will need to keep your legs elevated when you are sitting. You can rest your legs on a pillow or stool. Make sure that you keep the legs above your heart level.

About Metro Vein Centers:

Even if you take all of the necessary precautions, there is still a possibility that you will develop varicose veins. The good news is that you can see a vein doctor if you have varicose veins. However, you will have to wait until after you give birth to get treatment.
