Unlike the past, when coding was reserved largely for IT companies, today more and more companies need to have some degree of coding proficiency in order to do their jobs.
Seeing how a lot of business has moved online, maintaining an active presence online is vital, and in order to do so, you need programmers to create and maintain your website. It gets even more complicated if you want to develop your own app, which is also a lucrative proposition.
However, developing an app requires expertise in both iOS and Android coding, and with Windows 10 supporting apps, the list grows bigger.
Are Coding Jobs on the Decline
You may have read a report or a news article which claims that the coding jobs are on the decline, mostly due to outsourcing to different overseas countries which offer similar conditions for a lower cost.
Even though outsourcing is taking jobs overseas, the positions which require coding are actually on the rise, growing faster than the job market average. That means that more and more job positions require some knowledge of coding.
Who Needs Coding
Full-time coders are typically employed at big IT firms or small tech startups and concern themselves solely with coding. However, there are a number of professions where some basic coding is required in order to do some other job.
In fact, by some estimates, as much as 50% of coding jobs are now outside the traditional IT and technology sectors. Industries which have started relying more on coders and have started requiring coding skills include finance, healthcare and even manufacturing (using complex machines which need to be programmed).
What Kinds of Coding Are in Demand
Well, whatever programming language and framework you opt for, chances are that you will have no problem finding a job. However, there are certain languages which are more popular and versatile than others.
Java and Javascript are among the most sought after languages. Despite their similar names and frameworks, they actually have different applications, so make sure you have some idea what you want to do before you enroll a coding bootcamp to learn the basics.
One of the most versatile languages and one which may soon be the most requested is Python. Even though it is somewhat simple, this language is used in automation and smart device applications, which are becoming a booming market in their own right.
Should You Learn Coding
Whether you will need to learn to code depends a lot on your job description, your age, and several other factors. There are certain occupations which aren’t likely to require you to know to code, and especially if you are close to retirement, it is unlikely that you will need to learn a new skill in order to keep your job.
However, even if you are not obligated to learn to code, having this skill can help you get a better paying job, understand how computers work, and just help engage your brain, keeping it healthy and active.
