Christmas Decoration Ideas

One of the oldest traditions during the holiday season is decorating the home with Christmas lights and other decorations. From setting up lights to setting up inflatable Christmas figures, decorating for Christmas can be a very fun thing to do for any family.

Decoration ideas for Christmas are as old as the tradition itself. It seems like everything has been done before. Perhaps everything has been done before, but that still shouldn’t take away from the experience of decorating the home for Christmas.

This is a guide to some of the more common decoration ideas, and how you can make common decorations a bit more innovative and creative.

Common Christmas decoration ideas:

You’ve seen these before and will see them every holiday season. They are tried and true methods of decorating, although they are utilized by everybody in the neighborhood. There are three kinds of decoration ideas, each with their own theme.

The first, and most common of these are lights. Being the easiest of these three to set up, you simply purchase lights from any given store, connect them to the outlets inside and outside of your house, and wrap the wired lights around any given area of the house.

Lights can be set up to spell out different Christmas themed names or words and even Christmas themed characters and symbols, but there is a much easier way to do this, which will be revealed later.

Inflatable and yard decorations such as artificial Christmas trees are the second most common decoration idea. These are inflatable and solid holiday-themed characters and symbols that are powered just like lights are. Again, these are also common and anyone who owns a house big enough will have them around.

While these methods of Christmas decorating will not be popular, that doesn’t mean that they cannot be combined with more innovative ways of decorating.

Christmas movies get no love when decorating:

Christmas movies

While Christmas themed symbols and characters like trees, snowmen, elves, Santa Claus, and others are regularly shown as decorations, it is very rare that anything referring to Christmas movies are shown as decorations.

This is surprising, seeing as Christmas movies are just as significant in the culture of the holidays as the above symbols and characters. Movies such as A Christmas Carol and It’s a Wonderful Life have been cemented into the culture of the Christmas season, yet there are very few Christmas decorations that refer to these classic films.

Take A Christmas Carol, for example. Everybody knows that the film is about Ebenezer Scrooge seeing ghosts of his past, present, and future. One idea of an innovative decoration could be to place an inflatable child, adult, and old person surrounding an artificial Christmas tree. These three figures could represent the three ghosts in the film.

It’s a Wonderful Life revolves around a bank named Bailey Brothers’ Building and Loan. One of the simplest, cheapest, and most innovative Christmas decorations would be to simply have a neon sign with the name of that establishment and place it on the front of your house. It can be surrounded by other decorations as well without affecting anything.

There are other characters, symbols, and buildings in other Christmas movies that can easily be made into Christmas decorations. Because most do not think about Christmas movies when it comes to decorations, having references to any given Christmas movie as a decoration is very creative.

Why even use lights?

Christmas Decoration Ideas

Say you just want to do something simple for Christmas decorations, like decorate with lights that spell out “Merry Christmas” or “happy holidays.” Christmas lights are not necessary for this.

Consider using neon signs instead. Having a similar look to Christmas lights and being much easier and cheaper to set up, neon lights are a sensible alternative to any traditional Christmas decoration.
