Moving Out Of State

When you are transferred due to a job, or you want to move to a place that best suits your needs then this usually means a complicated move out of state.

When you have a family in tow then this becomes even more complicated. Children have a lot of needs that will have to be met at the same time you are doing some major life changes. It is a stressful time even when things go well but there are more possibilities of things going off the rails when kids are involved.

This means that it is important to have things well planned out. You can read This Old House reviews of moving companies but it goes beyond that. It’s important to know what you’re getting into. In this article, we will go over several ways that you can have a smoother move out of state even when you have children.

1 – Don’t attempt a road trip

There are a lot of ways to get to your new house in another state. Many people will often think about taking a road trip. It is cheaper than shipping a car, they feel, and it’s an opportunity to see the country before settling into their new home.

However, this is not a great idea when you have kids. For starters, coordinating with the mover is complicated and when you have children frequent stops are normal which can slow you down considerably.

There is also the safety issue. The risk of an accident rises the longer you are out on the road. With how many people are driving while distracted, it is almost inevitable that you will get into an accident. It could be minor but it could be major. Fatigue will also start and make it difficult for you to avoid getting into an accident.

Shipping a car may cost more than driving but when you add up the cost of fuel, tolls, and wear and tear on your car then it isn’t that much more. Add in the cost of peace of mind and it is a very logical decision to ship your car and then fly to your destination.

2 – Outsource

There are only so many hours in the day and you only have two hands. You can’t possibly do it all so you’re going to have to call for some backup.

Try to make a list of the things that need to be done and the time it takes to do each of them so you can get an idea of how somebody else can be helpful.

For instance, if there is a time when you have to be on the phone or run some errands and you need to be kid-free during that time, hire a babysitter or ask a friend or relative to take the kids during that time.

During the time that you have the kids, you can outsource the packing by having the moving company do that for you.
