5 June is celebrated as World Environment Day across the globe. This years theme for the event is #BeatPlasticPollution for “Ecosystem Restoration”. It serves as a reminder that people’s behavior regarding plastic matters because the substance is steadily destroying our soil, forests, and oceans. Côte d’Ivoire is hosting the event, and the Netherlands is providing support.
World Environment Day offers all of us a chance to do our part to protect the environment and the wellbeing of the earth at a time when extreme weather, unusual storms and cyclones, and natural disasters constantly serve as reminders of the irreparable harm done to mother Earth.
As per the official page of World Environment Day, this is what the motto of this event is for 2023:
“World Environment Day 2023 is a reminder that people’s actions on plastic pollution matters. The steps governments and businesses are taking to tackle plastic pollution are the consequence of this action.
It is time to accelerate this action and transition to a circular economy.
It is time to #BeatPlasticPollution.”
World Environment Day, which takes place every year on June 5th, brings together millions of people to celebrate environmental action and encourage governments, corporations, and everyday people to build a more sustainable world. Since 1973, UNEP has served as the event’s coordinator, and this year commemorates its 50th anniversary. The Dutch government is in favor of the 2023 initiative and has sponsored the same.
