What To Know About A Crane Hire In The Construction Industry

Crane Hire

It’s not exactly a secret that the construction industry is a fairly complex one.

There are a lot of moving parts on most sites, and it means that everyone has to be diligent and aware of their surroundings at all times. Naturally, it also means that there will be a pretty big need for lots of different types of equipment.

The thing about that is, it can be kind of hard to actually find places to borrow all of that equipment (or purchase it, depending on the project and the overall funding). Of course, here in the UK, we know this as hiring these pieces of equipment.  One of the most critical ones on a given construction site is a crane.

What Can Cranes Do?

Now, it might seem a bit silly to be wondering what cranes do on a construction site at first glance, but a lot of folks underestimate their versatility.  As you can see on this page, they can really bring a lot to a site at any given time. Just bear in mind that there are some additional safety concerns and considerations that should also be taken into account.

Of course, that’s true of pretty much any piece of construction equipment, so that probably doesn’t exactly come as a surprise to anyone reading this. For the most part, cranes are meant for heavy-lifting jobs.  They can be used for lighter objects as well, though, especially if they need to move over long distances.

Generally, though, that’s why most contractors and zone managers like to have one at their disposal.  Most rental places will allow you to hire the piece for a certain amount of time, or have an operator sent to complete the job over a series of days.  It will largely depend on who you are working with and what the requirements of the project are.

Don’t worry if you feel like the job you might need the hire for feels like it is “too small.”  Most of the time, that’s just really not going to be the case.  You can pretty much bring in outside help like this for anything you need to accomplish.  In fact, the smaller stuff typically will cost you less, too, so there’s really no reason to take advantage of these services.

Safety First

Construction Site

Naturally, one of the most important considerations for any construction site is safety.  It should always come first.  There are some additional details on how that works here, https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0925753517320271, but most site managers are already familiar with most of it.

What about specifically in regard to cranes, though?  Typically, there are licenses and the like associated with operating dangerous and heavy equipment like that.  Additionally, any responsible worksite should have a series of rules associated with operating these vehicles.

Perhaps most important is the fact that none of them should be operated while under the influence of any controlled substances.  Be that alcohol, prescription medication, or anything of the sort – it can be quite dangerous to do.  Rules like that should absolutely be made clear to anyone working at the zone, no matter what.

What else can be a concern, though?  Three of the top dangers to workers at a site are electricity, getting stuck between objects or rubble, and being hit by something heavy.  When operating a piece of equipment like a crane, you should always be certain that there is no one nearby that could end up seriously injured because of it.

Thankfully, though, a lot of these rules are not overly difficult to follow and enforce.  No one really wants to end up injured on the job, after all.  So, as long as the manager is able to impress the regulations upon everyone on the site, there will hopefully not be any big chance of an incident occurring.

How to Pick a Crane Hire

The final consideration that we’ve got to think about here is how we can pick lifting experts for our specific zones. That process isn’t always the easiest, but there are ways to speed it up if we are ever uncertain about it.

One of the first ones is to ask friends and coworkers (other folks in the industry) if they have any recommendations as far as what companies to borrow equipment from.

Depending on where you are in the United Kingdom, that might look a little different for you. Just remember that there are some organizations that offer their crane hires (and other equipment, of course) throughout the entire country, no matter what region you’re in.  This can certainly make things a bit easier if you’ve been stressing about that.

Explore the websites of the various contractors and hires out there to determine if what they have to offer will truly suit your needs. Usually, they’ll have all sorts of experiences listed out so that you know exactly what you’re getting into. You can also consult with them and even have them survey your zone before any commitment is made either way!

Additionally, it never hurts to scour the internet for some review content.  Although we always hear things like “don’t believe everything that you read,” and there is some merit in that train of thought, most reviewers aren’t there to mislead you.  Rather, they want to help other consumers like them figure out who they should be working with.

So, there are a lot of different things that you’ll be taking into account as you try to decide what crane hire company you want to work with within your construction zone.  Availability, positive reputation and reviews, and excellent quality workmanship are just a few of them.

Any time that you’re worried or uncertain about a choice, just remember that you can do a bit more research on a given company to see if they’ll be a good fit.  You deserve only the best for your jobs, no matter how big, small, or complicated they turn out to be.
